New South Wales Government Gazette 1840. 1840. Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia.<br><br> They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of the colony of New South Wales and its people in the past. <P></P> <P>Issued weekly with occasional special issues, the New South Wales Government Gazette contains information such as land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, tenders contracts, bankruptcies, dissolution of partnerships, police auctions of stolen property, statistics and much more ... There is a large amount of information (which include physical descriptions) relating to convicts - absconders, those who were granted ticket-of-leave, deserters, apprehensions and more.</P> <P>The Government Gazettes have information covering a broad spectrum of the community with important details and facts on many thousands of people. This product provides a great tool for researching the history of New South Wales, making information that is difficult to find, easily accessible on one CD.</P> <P> <BLOCKQUOTE><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">Example entry taken from 8 January 1840 issue:</SPAN></U><BR>State of the Female Factory, Parramatta, on Saturday, 4th January, 1839:<BR>Under-Colonial Sentence = 291<BR>In Solitary Confinement = 61<BR>Confines by order of the Matron = 36<BR>Nursing Children = 50<BR>Number Assignable = 370<BR>Number not Assignable = 81<BR>In Hospital = 38<BR>Total number of Women = 921<BR>Total number of Children - 250<BR>S. Bell, Matron <P></P></BLOCKQUOTE> <P> <BLOCKQUOTE><BR><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">Example entry taken from 8 January 1840 issue<BR>[partial extract only - only two entries listed below, there are about fifty listed just in this one issue]:</SPAN><BR>The undermentioned Prisoners having absconded from the individuals employments set against with stolen Certificates and Tickets of Leave, all Constables and others are hereby required and commanded to use their utmost exertion in apprehending and lodging them safe in custody.<BR>Taylor Thomas, alias Henley Thomas, Minerva (5), 30, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, writing master, 5 feet 7 1/2 inches, sallow comp., brown hair, grey eyes, charged with forgery, from No. 7 Road Party, since February 27, 1833.<BR>Jeffreys George (1), 34-758, 35, Devonshire, seaman and farm labourer, 5 feet 3 1/2 inches, dark sallow comp., brown to grey hair, hazel eyes, nose inclining a little to the left side, scar betwixt the eyebrows, blue ring on left little finger, left fourth and little fingers contracted, PJME cocoa-nut tree and H N inside lower left arm, anchor ball of ball of left thumb, scar back of left forefinger, from Goat Island, since July 17, 1836.</BLOCKQUOTE> <P></P>
