South Australian Government Gazette 1857. 1857. Government Gazettes contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. However they are largely an untapped resource. The few complete runs that are available are usually only found in major libraries.

And even for researchers who do have access to these the sheer size and extent of the Gazettes is daunting.

Now that is all changing ... with the publication of the gazettes in affordable and searchable form on CD-ROM. Published weekly, with the occasional 'Extraordinary' issues, they contain details of tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large, in every year of the Government Gazettes. They offer researchers much more than simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities.

You will find details on land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, tenders and contracts, dissolutions of partnerships, local government meetings, criminal activity (names, dates and if apprehended), statistics, unclaimed letters, reward notices, impoundments of cattle and horses, insolvent and bankruptcy notices, police auctions of stolen property, and much more.

Example entry taken from the 27 August 1857 issue:
Ecclesiastical Notice [partial extract only]
In the matter of William Tapper, late of the barque Sultana (now stranded at Guichen Bay), in the Province of South Australia, master mariner, deceased;
And in the matter of David Brown, later of Port Adelaide, in the said Province, mariner, deceased;
And in the matter of Thomas Williams, late of Mr Malcolm Gillis's station, Mount Remarkable, hut-keeper, deceased.

The whole of this volume (which is over 1000 pages) is searchable. Search for any word in the text - names, places and more.
